The paddlewheel steamer SS Republic® left New York City in October of 1865 carrying her precious cargo of gold coins and silver coins destined for New Orleans—where they were desperately needed to
rebuild the south after the Civil War. She never made it. She sank in a hurricane off the coast of Georgia. In 2003, her precious cargo of gold coins and silver coins was recovered, and these historic coins from the Civil War
are now available to you.
