Starting in 1903 the U.S. Mint struck special American gold coins to commemorate historic events. The first gold commemoratives were U.S. gold dollars struck to honor the 200th Anniversary of the Louisiana Purchase. The highest denomination American gold coins ever released are the $50 Gold Pan-Pac coins struck in 1915. One is round, the other octagonal! After decades without gold commemoratives, the U.S. Mint started striking them again in 1986.
