The first U.S. gold dollars were minted in 1849. The last was minted in 1889. The first design is the Type One Liberty Head gold, minted between 1849 and 1854. The Type II Indian Princess was minted between
1854 and 1856, and the Type III Indian Princess was struck from 1856 to 1889. Getting every gold dollar minted is quite a challenge, but getting one of each type of gold dollar is within nearly every collector's budget.
